Because plastic pollution in the ocean is considered to be the number one and most dangerous pollution problem as stated by NOAA( National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) . Because we need to raise awareness in the US on what part we can play to clean up the deadly soup that our sea animals are consuming. Because it is now estimated that 40% of all seabirds, sea mammals, fish and turtles have either been entangled or are ingesting this unhealthy mix of bio-degraded plastics that resemble plankton or jelly fish.
There are now over 50 countries that have banned plastic bags in retail stores. The American Chemistry Council( A group of representatives of all the oil companies) threatens US towns, counties and states with suit if they ban plastic bags. It is now time for citizens everywhere to say plastics need to be removed from the waste stream, manufacturers must take back this packaging and design it for many more lives, to offset the huge amount of plastics that are really not recycled( only 4%) and end up in waterways and ultimately the ocean
Changing behavior is difficult, but PROJECT GREEN RUNWAY hopes to help change attitudes and policies by engaging our youth leadership, our community partners and businesses, through creative self-expression, in the form of clothing design and TRASHION SHOWS. By partnering with such heros as Marin Sanitary, The Clean Oceans Project, Turtle Island Restoration and many more ,we will get the attention stage center and front, on how we can all do better for our sea-life and the entire food chain. Get involved , or just come to our event on June 9, 2012 . You can become an environmental activist, a mentor of youth, or cultivate your own creativity by joining PROJECT GREEN RUNWAY, a home-grown in Marin organization founded by artist Elise Cheval and Environmental Advocate Christin Anderson. Get your style on by being on the RUNWAY with us.
